This is surprising coming from a bandleader best known for his popularization of styles like bomba, plena, and seis, typical of his home island, Puerto Rico. Stylistically, this album rests comfortably within the safe borders of mambo, cha cha, and son. The songs are well-crafted enough, and the vocals of a quality that the listener does not mind this new focus. Less percussion-driven than either past or future projects, this record is oriented toward the song, the vocalist. The album suffers a bit from poor recording quality and conditions, and hence some of the more subtle textures are missed. Led by master percussionist Rafael Cortijo and fronted by the famous sonero Ismael Rivera, the combo is as swinging and tight as ever before.
